Here are 10 more fun facts about Guam!

  1. Guam is located roughly 7,000 miles from the U.S. mainland.
  2. “Where America’s Day Begins,” Guam is the first place where the sun rises on U.S. soil as it is 14-hours ahead of the U.S. east coast.
  3. The island was first visited by the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan on March 6, 1521, while sailing for the King of Spain.
  4. Guam is about 30 miles long and four to 12 miles wide at different points.
  5. There is a beach in Guam known as ‘Gun Beach.’ The beach also houses Guam’s largest beach bar.
  6. A Japanese soldier hid in Guam’s jungle for nearly three decades, unaware that World War II had ended. He was discovered in 1972, and later visited Guam several times after returning to Japan.
  7. The economy of the country is supported by tourism and the United States Armed Forces.
  8. The descendants of Austronesian people are the original inhabitants of Guam. They are known as Chamorro and have ethnic roots in Borneo, Mexico, Spain, and the Philippines.
  9. A wide range of water sports and activities attract people of all ages to Guam. These include snorkeling, dolphin watching, paddleboarding, swimming, jet skiing, and kayaking.
  10. Guam is, per capita, the biggest consumer of Spam on the planet.
