Hagatña is the capital and oldest village of Guam. It is in the central-western part of the island and is part of the Luchan (Western) District. Hagatna was the center of political, religious, and economic activity during the Spanish colonial era and has many historical and cultural sites, such as Plaza de Espana, Dulce Nombre de Maria Cathedral-Basilica, and Latte Stone Park. Today, it is the seat of the island’s three branches of government: Judicial, Legislative, and Executive as well as the religious center for the Catholic Church. It is also home to numerous commercial activities including legal offices, banks, department/variety stores, insurance, technical and professional services and restaurants.The village’s name comes from the word “haga”, which means blood, relating to the bloodlines of the families that established the village.
