Mangilao is the educational center of Guam. It is in the eastern part of the island and houses the University of Guam, Guam Community College, and several public and private schools. Mangilao also has many agricultural and recreational areas, such as Ija Agricultural Station, Leo Palace Resort, and Marbo Cave. Mangilao is known for its annual Donne Festival, which showcases the spicy pepper that is widely used in Chamorro cuisine. Mangilao’s name comes from the word “ilao’ which means to look for something. In the past, hunters and fishermen would go to Mangilao to search for crabs, deer, wild pigs, and fish.
