Merizo is a southern village that is part of Guam’s scenic southern shoreline on a long strip of land between mountains and sea. It is part of the Haya (Southern) District. Merizo is known for its scenic views and marine activities, such as boating, fishing, and snorkeling. It also hosts the annual Malesso’ Fiestan Tasi, which celebrates the importance of the ocean to Guam’s past, present, and future. It often includes boat races and other water sports competitions and exhibitions. Dates of the festival vary from year to year. Merizo has many attractions, such as Merizo Pier Park and Priest’s Pools. To date, the village remains primarily residential with commerce limited to the privately owned Cocos Island Resort and its related vendors, a few small village-based retail stores, a gas station, and a branch of a local bank. The village’s name comes from the word “malesso’”, which means peaceful or quiet.
