Sinajaña is a small but densely populated village in the central-eastern part of the island perched along a hilltop between Agana Springs and Agana Heights. It is part of the Kattan (Eastern) District. Sinajana was once a farming community where villagers grew crops such as corn, bananas, and taro. At one time, it operated as the coffee capital of the island supplying all civilian Guam pre-World War II. Today, the village has many recreational and educational facilities, such as Sinajana Community Center, the public C.L. Taitano Elementary school, and the private Bishop Baumgartner Memorial School. The village name of Sinajaña is believed to derive from the CHamoru “chinahån-ña” – “his or her cooking ground.”
