Talofofo is a southern village that faces the Pacific Ocean. It is part of the Haya (Southern) District. Former Mayor Tito Mantanona coined the name “God’s Country” for this village, a nickname affectionately used by many residents and seen on signs throughout the village. Talofofo is known for its scenic views and adventurous activities, such as surfing, hiking, and golfing. Talofofo also has many legends and stories, such as the tale of Sergeant Shoichi Yokoi, a Japanese soldier who hid in the jungle for 28 years after World War II. The village has many attractions, such as Talofofo Falls Park, Yokoi’s Cave, and Onward Talofofo Golf Resort. The village’s name likely comes from the CHamoru phrase “entalo’ i fe’fo’”, which means “between the cliffs.”
