Yona is the first southern village on the eastern side of Guam and is part of the Haya (Southern) District. Its boundaries stretch for six miles, from the south side of Pago Bay to the north side of the bridge at Jeff’s Pirates Cove in Ipan, Talofofo. The village extends west on Route 17 (aka Cross Island Road), from Route 4 (aka Chalan Kanton Tasi) to Tarzan Falls, near the Naval Magazine overlook. Yona was once a farming and ranching village where villagers grew crops such as corn, rice, and sugar cane. Today, Yona has many attractions, such as Leo Palace Resort, Tagachang Beach Park, and Priest’s Pools. The village’s name comes from the word “iyo-ña”, which means a type of bird.
